The Albany 7, Albany, New York, $319 million, 25th March 2011
The Albany 7. Sounds like a gang or something, but this group of seven co-workers from the New York Division of Housing and Community Renewal are actually Mega Millions winners. The group won a massive $319 million! Now that divided by 7 isn’t a small sum of money if I do the math right!
They’ve played Mega Millions together for years. The story of how they won the Mega Millions is one of those twist of fate moments that everyone wishes they had.
Mike Barth was hungry while he was standing in line to buy the ticket for the group, so he bent over to grab a Snickers bar. Some rude person, who is now no richer than they were before, shoved in front of him and bought a ticket. Oh well, pushy dude 0, Mike and his mates $319 million! So Barth got the next ticket, after deciding not to tell the guy off, and got the shock of his life when Gabrielle Mahar, another of the seven, saw their winning numbers on TV late at night and let the rest of the 7 know.
Meeting with a financial advisor before claiming their winnings was good thinking on the part of these IT professionals, who decided to go for the lump sum of cash.
Their aspirations for what to do with the money, but it’s a lesson to us all, next time someone comes collecting around the office, throw in your $2, you never know what you might win!
